Thousands of young, working class and passionate protesters have gathered in socially-distanced protests across Wales against racism and police violence and in solidarity with George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The protests against police violence and structural racism across the US, also condemned similar injustices in the U.K., with similar events in Wrexham, Aberdare and Aberystwyth happening or planned for the next few days. It seems like there is a spontaneous movement against racism in every town in Wales
Socialist Party members report:
Cardiff
“Around 2000 gathered in Bute Park after two different planned protests merged. Social distancing was largely maintained and most were wearing masks. Socialist Party members got a great response to our message and we sold out of all copies of the Socialist.”
Caerphilly
“Around 300, mostly youth, mostly working class at the protest at Caerphilly castle. Despite the wind preventing us using a table we sold out of The Socialist and handed out the full supply of our leaflets, illustrating the hunger for solutions amongst the young crowd.
“Jaime Davies got a good reception at the rally, a photo of which was used as the lead photo by a local news outlet. A load of people were interested in joining the party, and will be coming to our Zoom public meeting on Tuesday.”
Swansea
“1000 gathered in Swansea today, one of the biggest demonstrations we’ve had in years, socially distancing was mandated and encouraged and the crowed enthusiastic to our ideas, again the rally was overwhelmingly young, working class and there where many from minority groups.
“Several Socialist Party members who’d helped organise the protest were involved as official stewards, and we’ve been working along side some fantastic young local activists.
“All of our leaflets were given out, papers and placards sold and there was a lot of interest in the Young Socialist meeting on Wednesday that we are hoping the organisers of the event will be contributing too.
“This, again, graphically shows the weight of feeling and the thirst for answered and solutions to the systematic racism and the capitalist system that relies on it to function.”
Merthyr
“About 250 at the protest at the Red House – at least 95% of them really young valleys youth. The event was organised by Chloe, a young, new activist. A lot of people indicated they wanted to join the Socialist Party.”
