Swansea Trades Council has issued a call to arms to lobby Swansea Council to step back from another £24 million cuts to services. It has called a lobby of the council on Thursday 28th February at 2.00 pm. (The council has brought forward its meeting from the normal 5.00 pm start to 3.00 pm in an apparent attempt to deter workers from lobbying).
Trades Council secretary Ronnie Job explains: “Another year, another round of council cuts, but this time its cuts to the bone! The £24m of proposed cuts for this year’s council budget will mean hundreds more jobs to be axed, services cut and council tax increases going through the roof.
“These cuts will stretch across education (145 teaching posts threatened), social services (127 posts threatened), parks, sports facilities, culture, in fact every council service you can think of is facing a barrage of cuts, with up to 30% in some departments! Once again these Tory cuts have been obediently supported by Swansea’s Labour Cabinet meeting which nodded through its approval in less than 20 minutes.
“Help us fightback against Tory austerity and Labour cuts by joining in with other trade unionists and residents to support Swansea Trades Councils anti-cuts meetings & protests.”
