Wales Shop Stewards Network conference, Saturday June 30

Trade union reps prepare for WSSN conference

Shop stewards from all over Wales are preparing to come together at the Wales Shop Stewards conference at the Temple of Peace in Cardiff on Saturday 30 June. Delegations from dozens of workplaces and unions have committed to come to the conference to draw a balance sheet of trade union struggle over the past year and discuss the way forward.

In the last year reps and shop stewards have been the backbone of the struggle against the attack on the pensions of public sector workers which have involved the three one day strikes by PCS and UCU including a one day public sector strike on November 30th involving 200,000 public sector workers in Wales.

Private sector employers have also attacked final salary pension schemes and workers at Ford and Unilever in Wales have taken strike action to defend their pensions. And the sparks, construction electricians, have won a big victory against the 'Big Seven' construction companies' attempt to impose the BESNA contracts cutting wages by 35%.

And disabled REMPLOY workers are currently involved in a huge battle with the government to prevent the closure of their factories.

So there is plenty to discuss at the all day conference on June 30. So far a whole range of rank and file trade union leaders have agreed to speak* at the conference including: Katrine Williams, Chair PCS Wales; Les Woodward REMPLOY National Convenor; Claire Job Swansea Health UNISON; Owen Herbert RMT Council of Executives; Cerith Griffiths Wales FBU Chair; John Watkins, Chair UCU; John Hancock POA NEC; Andrew Wilkes UNITE construction electricians; Mark Evans UNISON Wales Local Government Service Group Executive member; Ramon Corria Secretary Cardiff Trades Union Council; Rob Williams National Shop Stewards Committee Chair;

Any union rep or shop steward can be a delegate to the conference or workers can be elected by their branches or trade union committee.

Wales Shop Stewards Conference - Saturday 30 June - Temple of Peace, King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff (parking available) - 10.00 am - 3.00 pm
